Cheju Halla University and Uzbekistan's Higher Education Ministry Sign AI MOU
Cheju Halla University signed an MOU on AI higher-education capacity building with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation (MoHESI) on June 18 at the Tashkent International Investment Forum. The agreement provides a basis for expanding the AI talent-development work being carried out at Tashkent International University (TIU) through the KOICA Civil Society Cooperation Program into higher-education cooperation with the Uzbek government.
Young Joon Lee, Cheju Halla’s Vice President and KOICA program director, who is also a professor in the AI Department, signed the agreement with Deputy Minister Salomov Uktam Rahimovich. The ministry’s Digital Education and AI Technology Development Center (DETDC) joined as a partner institution.
Four areas of cooperation over three years
The two institutions agreed to pursue cooperation in the following areas for the next three years:
- Intensive Training of Trainers (ToT) workshops for university faculty and researchers
- AI curriculum development and links to AI certification
- Building an AI education ecosystem
- Expanding AI education and research cooperation between universities in the two countries
The partnership centers on an expanding ToT model in which local educators can go on to teach students and fellow faculty. Its aim is to create a foundation for sustained growth in Uzbekistan’s AI higher-education capacity beyond short-term training.
Connected to Uzbekistan’s national strategies
The cooperation is related to Uzbekistan’s ‘AI Development Strategy 2030’ and ‘Digital Uzbekistan’ national strategies. Cheju Halla University plans to use the MOU as a basis for gradually expanding cooperation with Uzbekistan’s higher-education institutions and continuing to develop a global model for AI-based higher-education collaboration.
