STAI-AWS 2025 Learncation: AI for Climate Action Comes to Jeju
The “STAI-AWS 2025 Learncation Program,” operated as part of the Jeju RISE initiative supported by Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, was successfully concluded under the theme “AI for Climate Action.” Over 30 undergraduate and graduate students from KAIST, Yonsei University, and Cheju Halla University gathered in Jeju for a 7-day intensive program.

Hands-on Training Led by AWS
The program combined hackathons, lectures, and experiential programs to teach AI technologies for addressing climate crisis, with the goal of cultivating digital transformation talent and enhancing global employability. Notably, Amazon Web Services (AWS) directly organized the hackathon, mentoring, and workshops, providing hands-on cloud and AI technology training.
Additionally, Prof. Hiba Baroud from Vanderbilt University visited Korea to deliver lectures on infrastructure investment models and social impact assessment for climate crisis response. Faculty from KAIST and Yonsei, along with various experts, further elevated participants’ capabilities through lectures and team projects.
Learncation Utilizing Jeju’s Local Resources
During the mid-program period of July 7-8, a learncation program combining education and cultural experiences using Jeju’s local resources was operated. On July 7, participants visited the National Institute of Meteorological Sciences for lectures and experiences on climate research and AI technology. On July 8, they attended a color hunting class at Tutti Colori in Aewol, exploring the value and potential of Jeju’s local resources through learning in nature.

Team Research Presentations and Awards
On July 10, team research presentations were conducted on topics including ‘AI Solutions for Crisis Response to Climate Change,’ ‘AI Technology for Strengthening Climate Resilience in Urban and Rural Areas,’ and ‘AI-based Solutions for Improving Climate Resilience in Developing Countries.’
The STAI-tuned Team, presenting on “Development of an AI-based Dual Verification Platform for Climate Infrastructure in Developing Countries,” won the Grand Prize — the Jeju Governor’s Award. The team will subsequently participate in the KOICA-organized ‘AI for Climate Action Award’ international competition.

The “STAI-AWS 2025 Learncation Program” is a public-private-academic collaborative global talent development program with cooperation from Cheju Halla University, KAIST, Yonsei University, AWS, and Saltlux, sponsored by the Asan Nanum Foundation. It is expected to continue contributing to the spread of sustainable learncation education models centered on Jeju.
