Cheju Halla University Discusses AI Research Cooperation with Digital Technologies and AI Research Institute

A delegation from Cheju Halla University (led by Professor Young Joon Lee) visited the Digital Technologies and Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (AIRI.UZ) in Tashkent to discuss AI research and education cooperation. The meeting focused intensively on various collaboration possibilities for creating synergies between AI education programs and research projects.

Institute Overview and Achievements

AIRI.UZ is an institution that inherits the tradition of the Cybernetics Research Institute established in the 1960s, and was reorganized as the leading institute for AI development in Uzbekistan by presidential decree in 2021.

  • 27 core researchers, with plans to expand to 60 by 2024
  • More than 16 doctoral researchers and 44 research staff active
  • Over 30 scientific papers published by researchers
  • More than 15 innovation projects underway as of 2021

Key Cooperation Discussion Points

  1. Expanding research exchange opportunities
  2. Joint supervision of student research projects
  3. Providing specialized research facilities and computing resources
  4. Supporting curriculum development

AIRI.UZ possesses outstanding research capabilities in computer vision, speech processing, and machine learning, which align perfectly with Cheju Halla University’s AI curriculum. In particular, the institute’s ongoing projects — including national herbarium plant recognition and cardiac disease diagnosis — emphasize the practical application of AI and align with Cheju Halla University’s practice-oriented AI education model.

Through this cooperation, both sides plan to actively collaborate to further elevate the quality of AI research and education and contribute to Uzbekistan’s digital transformation.
