Dark Lens Team Wins Excellence Award at 2024 Jeju Smart Tourism Big Data Hackathon
The Dark Lens team representing Cheju Halla University (Lee Kyubum, Kim Eunji, Moon Jaehyeon) won the Excellence Award at the 2024 Jeju Smart Tourism Big Data Hackathon, held from September 27 to 29. The competition was organized for the purpose of presenting data-driven solutions for the sustainable development of Jeju tourism and problem-solving.
Project Overview – AI and LLM-Based Dark Tourism Service
The Dark Lens team proposed a dark tourism service that spotlights Jeju’s historical sites and tragic events. The service uses Large Language Models (LLM) to provide real-time guides and personalized location recommendations, elevating the travel experience of tourists.
Key Features
- Personalized Location Recommendations: Discovering and recommending lesser-known historical sites through collaborative filtering and content-based filtering.
- Real-Time AI Guide Service: Upon arriving at a historical site, the AI explains the historical background of the location based on GPS.
- Video Generation System: Automatically editing photos and videos taken during travel to generate short-form videos optimized for social media.
Award Background and Team Achievements
The Dark Lens team analyzed Jeju tourism’s problems using data and presented a plan to provide new experiences centered on history and culture, moving away from the existing nature-scenery-focused tourism. In particular, the real-time guide via LLM and the automatic video generation feature received high marks from the judges.
The team also earned excellent marks for presenting a sustainable tourism model that uses Jeju’s historical sites to disperse tourists and alleviate overcrowding at major attractions.
Vision for the Development of Jeju Tourism
The Dark Lens team, which won at this hackathon, plans to use AI and data technology to contribute to increasing the diversity of Jeju tourism and achieving sustainable development. Through this project, they will raise awareness of Jeju’s historical sites and tragic events, and provide tourists with a deeper, more meaningful experience.
The achievements of the Cheju Halla University Dark Lens team in this instance are a case that demonstrates the potential for development and new content creation in the Jeju tourism industry, and the team is expected to continue leading regional innovation through a variety of AI-based tourism solutions.
